Fountain Pen Preservation Tips By Mr. Yusuf Mansoor

The most important thing after writing experience with a Fountain Pen is the preservation and storing of it. Due to advent of modern pen making material notably like Acrylics, Alumanite, casine, Burl, composite Burl and Acetes etc make storing more relevant in my humble opinion. Here are some of the tips in my view which can help us preserve our instrument and also increase their shelf life. Please note these basic pointers are applicable to all kinds and materials.

1. Pen Hygiene: Pen Hygiene is the most important aspect to protect our instruments. Regardless of usages (regular or just dip testing) rinsing, thoroughly and extensively cleaning, air drying and soft polishing is mandatory.

 2. Lubrication of threaded part with non reactive lubricants like silicon grease/gel

 3. Storing in an open single or multiple pen holders/box without putting a string around pens.

4. Always store in a place which has least temperature and/or environmental variation, as we say cool and dry place. (For example never store in a room whose Air-conditioner runs and stops, process of excessive temp variation is suicidal for fountain pens).

5. Placing of silicon dioxide bags or sachet, product like Silica gel which is an amorphous and porous form of silicon dioxide and serves as moisture observant.

 6. Periodical check, look out for moisture precipitation and polishing with soft cloths, Last but not the least.

 7. Showering your affection on your FP and treating them as your own baby..
